Elephant Nature Park is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center set in a natural valley approximately 60 km from Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. Over the years, the park has become the home of several dozens of elephants and many other animals, including water buffaloes, dogs, cats, pigs and goats. Many of the elephants were previously used in illegal logging and forced breeding programmes, leaving the pachyderms physically and emotionally scarred. ENP‘s founder Lek Chailert has received numerous awards for her endeavours to educate the public and to protect the Asian elephant, as well as Thailand‘s natural environment. The park opened its gates to day visitors and volunteers with the aim to further humans‘ understanding of the way elephants should be treated: by caring for the animals, feeding them and taking a bath in the river with them, people can learn about -and spend time with- elephants in an environment that doesn‘t exploit them and in which animal welfare comes first.
