In operation since the early 1950s, the American military base in Keflavík, Iceland, was closed in 2006/2007. Initially unpopular, its shutting and the subsequent withdrawal of US forces (all within six months) met with distinct displeasure from the Icelanders. Yet whilst such geo-political history feeds into The Lodgers, the work presented here is more of a metaphorical and contemplative piece. It ruminates upon themes of loss, abandonment, the fears of the modern age, the paranoia that is provoked and encouraged as a form of control and the architecture of our environment as an extension of our individual and collective psyches. A sense of the post-apocalyptic pervades these images of interiors and landscapes which, whilst devoid of people, still suggest a presence, even if this may be of an indefinable, somewhat abstract nature. lodgers_menu.html
